In a horrific incident, 6 people were killed and injured in the center of Najaf province, Iraq. An Iraqi security source stated that "a dispute over a woman (tribal custom) led to the shooting death of a father and son, and left 4 others severely injured by one of their relatives in the Al-Qazwiniyah area in central Najaf." The source added that "a large security force cordoned off the scene of the incident and transported the bodies to the forensic medicine department, while the injured were taken to the hospital for necessary treatment, whereas the perpetrator fled to an unknown location." The custom known as "Nahwa" is an ancient Iraqi tribal tradition that prohibits a girl from marrying a man outside her tribe, and under this tradition, the girl's uncle or cousin can prevent her from marrying anyone else, even if she remains unmarried for life. Iraqi law considers any act of "tribal Nahwa" to be a crime punishable by up to 3 years in prison.
