US Vice President Kamala Harris announced assistance exceeding $1.5 billion, part of which will be allocated to Ukraine's energy sector and to improve the humanitarian situation in the country due to the ongoing war with Russia, which has lasted for 27 months. The Vice President's office stated that "the $1.5 billion includes $500 million in new funding for energy sector assistance and the reallocation of $324 million from previously announced funds towards urgent energy infrastructure repairs and other needs in Ukraine."
It added, "These efforts will help Ukraine confront the impacts of recent Russian attacks on energy infrastructure by supporting reforms and restoring normal operations, improving Ukraine's ability to cope with energy supply disruptions, and laying the groundwork for the renovation and expansion of Ukraine's energy system."
Harris also announced the provision of more than $379 million in humanitarian aid from the US State Department and the US Agency for International Development to assist refugees and others affected by the war. This announcement came during Harris's attendance at the special peace summit for Ukraine in Lucerne, Switzerland, where she is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and speak at the summit's general session.
