Army Leader: Retrenchment is Not an Option in Our Dictionary

Army Commander General Joseph Aoun visited Beirut Air Base where he met with officers and soldiers following the crash of a military helicopter in the Hammana area, resulting in the martyrdom of Captain Pilot Joseph Hanna and First Lieutenant Pilot Richard Saab. He emphasized that the loss of the military institution is significant, while also pointing out that sacrifice is the fate of military personnel, leading to martyrdom if duty calls.

He praised the efforts and high professionalism of the Air Force during various missions, commending the accomplishments it has achieved, particularly in combating terrorism, especially during the Fajr al-Jroud battle, and in tackling drug trafficking gangs, as well as more recently in firefighting missions in Greece and Cyprus, which were appreciated by the authorities of both countries. He noted the excellence of these forces in maintaining and developing the army's air capabilities despite modest resources.

He stated, "We grow with our martyrs; their blood will not be shed in vain, but rather serve as a motivation that strengthens our resolve to withstand and continue. The army has sacrificed martyrs on the altar of the homeland during numerous missions, whether in confronting the Israeli enemy and terrorism, or in pursuing drug dealers and criminals. We will not retreat in the face of difficulties, and we will remain steadfast in honor of our martyrs' blood and the dignity of our soldiers. Retreat is not an option in our dictionary, and we have no choice but to continue."

He added, "The military institution grows with you. You are the backbone of Lebanon, and this is confirmed by the trust of the Lebanese people and friendly countries in you." Afterward, General Aoun headed to the town of Choueifat and the Baqinaa area in Metn, where he offered condolences to the families of the two fallen officers, commending their virtues and dedication to performing their sacred duty.
