The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has suspended Spain’s duo Álvaro Morata and Rodri for one match due to their chanting "Gibraltar is Spanish" during celebrations in Madrid following their victory in the European Championship. UEFA's disciplinary committee decided on Wednesday to "suspend the players for the next match" for "violating fundamental rules of decency and using sporting events to present non-sporting claims, thereby harming the image of football and UEFA."
As a result, the duo will miss Spain's match against Serbia scheduled for September 5 in the UEFA Nations League. Morata and Rodri, the best player of Euro 2024, led thousands of fans in singing "Gibraltar is Spanish" during a celebration in Madrid after Spain's 2-1 victory over England on July 14 in the Euro 2024 final. The Gibraltar Football Association subsequently filed an official complaint with UEFA regarding this matter.
It is noted that Britain has controlled the Strait of Gibraltar, located at the southern tip of Spain, for over 300 years, while Spain claims sovereignty over it.
