The National Security Agency announced on Wednesday the arrest of two suspects who were managing over 200 extortion and defamation pages in Al-Muthanna Governorate, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA). A statement from the agency indicated that its teams identified the two suspects and apprehended them in the act, seizing nine mobile devices, five laptops, and multiple seals.
They were arrested "after monitoring and following up on social media platforms, and as a result of complaints received by the National Security Agency about several citizens, dignitaries, administrative unit directors, and officials in Al-Muthanna Governorate who were subjected to extortion and media defamation through social media sites and pages." The agency noted that "the suspects were confronted with sufficient evidence and confessed outright to managing over 200 accounts and pages under various names and titles, which were used for slander, defamation, and extortion in exchange for financial sums from well-known public figures."
