Geagea, Municipal Elections, and the Heavy Joke

Lebanese Forces Party leader Samir Geagea confirmed that "with the approaching date for calling the electoral bodies for municipal elections, some parliamentary blocs are attempting to obstruct this entitlement by claiming that the budget required for its conduct, which does not exceed a few million dollars, can only be secured through a law project to open a credit that the government must send to the parliament, and consequently the need for a legislative session to make a decision regarding this matter."

Geagea noted in a statement that "the blocs and deputies who endorse this proposal, fully aware that there is no possibility for any legislative sessions amid the presidential vacuum, are setting a condition that cannot be met, with only one goal: to postpone the municipal elections."

He reminded the deputies that "the government has been opening credits for over a year without returning to the parliament even when it was a legislative body, from the account of special drawing rights."

He added: "The government is capable, as it has done repeatedly in recent months, of withdrawing a credit of a few million dollars from the special drawing rights without returning to the parliament to complete the municipal elections," indicating that the government has already spent more than 700 million dollars without referring back to the parliament.

Geagea concluded: "Those who do not want the municipal elections should declare that openly and frankly, but hiding behind the need to hold a legislative session to approve a credit for the municipal elections is a heavy joke in these days that they have truly turned heavy."
