Lebanon Achieves Medical Milestone: First Heart Catheterization for Premature Baby

Lebanon and the region have recorded a significant medical achievement with the first surgical procedure to address a patent ductus arteriosus in a premature baby, supervised by Professor Zakiya Sleiba. This baby, weighing 1,300 grams, became the first of its kind to undergo such a procedure in Lebanon and the region. The case was discovered when the mother required an early delivery at Hotel Dieu Hospital, where a hole in the baby's heart artery was identified, necessitating immediate intervention and monitoring.

Only two weeks after birth, the operation was successfully performed using catheterization techniques instead of traditional surgery to close the ductus arteriosus, reducing risks and accelerating the recovery process. Professor Zakiya Sleiba, a pediatric cardiologist, explained that had the hole in the ductus arteriosus not been closed, it would have quickly led to strain on the heart and lungs, requiring surgical procedures to prevent numerous complications.

Professor Sleiba also emphasized the critical importance of coordinating and collaborating among various hospital departments, as well as the medical and nursing teams, for the success of such procedures. This operation represents an important achievement in Lebanese medicine and at Hotel Dieu Hospital, showcasing the advanced medical capabilities of doctors in Lebanon despite significant challenges. Additionally, this step reflects ongoing successes in the field of medicine and medical technology innovation in the region. The accomplishment of the medical team underscores their commitment to providing the best possible healthcare and embodies hope for many families who may need such treatments in the future.
