After the assassination of Ismail Haniya, the head of Hamas's political bureau, on its territory, Iran raised a red flag known as the "Flag of Revenge" on the dome of a mosque in Qom. In a circulated video, a person is seen raising the flag above the dome of Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, the same flag that was raised following the death of Qasem Soleimani.
This raising of the revenge flag, in Iranian tradition, is considered a "declaration of war." The assassination of Haniya constituted a clear violation of the security situation in Iran, especially amid tightened measures accompanying the inauguration of President Masoud Bezhakian. Haniya was killed in a targeted missile attack early Wednesday, hitting his residence in Tehran, where he was visiting for the inauguration ceremony of the new Iranian president.
