Social media users and activists have criticized a circulating video for a restaurant announcement in Jordan, showcasing a way of eating mansaf that they described as "devouring and gorging," rather than a natural way to consume food. In the advertisement, two young men are filmed promoting a restaurant that serves the most famous mansaf dish in Jordan, but in an unnatural manner, eating the food with unprecedented greed. This dish holds respect in Jordan and is served at celebrations and mourning gatherings.
Activists stated that this manner is provocative and does not reflect the way Jordanians eat, even if it is for promotional purposes, as the negative repercussions are significant. However, others pointed out that the two young men in the video did not target mansaf specifically, as they have appeared in similar videos consuming knafeh, burgers, chocolate, and various sweets.
Apology from the Restaurant
In response, the restaurant issued an apology and clarification regarding the significant controversy triggered by the advertisement video, emphasizing its respect for customs and traditions and its commitment to preserving cultural heritage. They also noted that customers had made the effort to present an unpaid advertisement, capturing content that merely reflects themselves, which is consistent with what they provide at other restaurants they visit. Meanwhile, social media users viewed this apology as a natural response to citizen reactions and their commitment to identity and cultural heritage.
Similar advertisements have previously sparked outrage among Jordanians, only to later reveal that the aim was promotion and financial gain.
