Abu Ghaith: Syria's Return to the Arab League is Inevitable, but...

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abu Ghaith, stated that Syria's return to the Arab League has not yet been resolved. However, he confirmed that this return has become inevitable and will happen, but it is not necessary for it to occur at the next Arab summit. In an interview with Al-Jadid TV, Abu Ghaith noted that "there should have been no rush in the process of suspending Syria's membership in the Arab League," emphasizing that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad won the battle by decisively securing it militarily years ago when the opposition failed to enter Damascus.

Regarding the Saudi-Iranian agreement, Abu Ghaith expressed hope that this agreement would not falter, stressing that Iranian positions should be moderate and that Iran needs to refrain from interfering in Arab affairs. Concerning the evolving situation in Sudan, he pointed out that the situation is extremely complex, with two military forces trying to eliminate one another, stating, "We have not observed external interventions," and that neighboring countries are working to find a settlement. He added that "continuing battles and closed borders are hindering our efforts for a resolution."

On the Lebanese file, the Secretary-General of the Arab League hoped that the Arab atmosphere and the Saudi-Iranian understanding and the Saudi-Syrian rapprochement would lead to a breakthrough in the Lebanese situation and pave the way for the election of a president. In response to a question about whether Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri is insisting on nominating Sleiman Frangieh for the presidency, he said, "I don't think he is determined on this matter and his mind is open in this context." He continued, stating that Hezbollah has its own special status as part of the legitimate constitutional entity in Lebanon, as it is part of the Lebanese government; however, Iran will not be allowed to be present in the Arab League hall.

Abu Ghaith also expressed skepticism about Saudi Arabia moving towards normalization with Israel, reaffirming a commitment to the Arab Peace Initiative.
