Morocco: Celebrities Launch Campaign to Change

Famous artists in Morocco have launched a campaign on social media demanding the amendment of "unjust laws against women" and the achievement of gender equality, in the context of a discussion about reforming the penal code. The campaign consists of video clips featuring eight familiar faces from television and cinema, who share stories of women who have been victims of violence, early marriage, or injustices related to inheritance inequality.

The campaign aims to "leverage the love, listening, and respect that celebrities have from the public to bring about a comprehensive change in the laws," as disclosed by filmmaker Sonia Trabb, to the "French Press Agency." Among the clips aired on Instagram, one video features actress Bushra Ahres speaking on behalf of a young woman named Fatima, who says: “I was 15 years old when I was repeatedly raped by my uncle and became pregnant. Instead of taking me to a doctor, my mother took me to a woman for a secret abortion.”

The video, which has garnered over 150,000 views, adds: "After we filed a complaint, the perpetrator was sentenced to two years in prison, but he only served six months. This incident destroyed me, and I wished for death."
