Congress Forms Task Force to Investigate Shooting Incident Involving Trump

Republican and Democratic leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives announced today, Tuesday, that "the House has decided to form a bipartisan task force to investigate the shooting incident involving Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump." The task force, comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats, will make recommendations for reforming relevant government agencies and will have subpoena power, according to a statement from Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries. The U.S. Secret Service has faced severe criticism since the assassination attempt on the former president on July 13. Johnson stated in a release: "The security failures that allowed the attempted assassination of Donald Trump are shocking." He added that the task force will act swiftly "to ensure that such failures are not repeated." He noted that House lawmakers will vote this week on a resolution to create the task force and its members.
