Poll: Majority of Israeli Jews Oppose the Establishment of a Palestinian State

A poll conducted by the Israeli Democracy Institute (IDI) revealed that nearly two-thirds (63%) of Israeli Jews oppose the establishment of a Palestinian state, while approximately three-quarters (73%) of Arab Israelis support it. Among Israeli Jews, 71.5% believe that "terrorism will remain the same or will become stronger with the establishment of a Palestinian state," whereas among Arab Israelis, 53% think that "terrorism will weaken or cease with the establishment of a Palestinian state," according to the poll.

The survey titled "The Eleventh War in Gaza" was conducted from February 12 to 15, 2024, by the Viterbi Family Center for Public Opinion and Policy Research at IDI. Out of the respondents, 510 were interviewed in Hebrew and 102 in Arabic. The margin of error for the sample was +/-4.04% at a 95% confidence level.

In addition to questions about the establishment of a Palestinian state, the survey included topics such as the likelihood of achieving "absolute victory in the war in Gaza," the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza's residents, the potential reform of the Palestinian Authority, the next steps regarding the northern front, reaching a political agreement to end the war, Israel's economic outlook, the possibility of a wave of public protests against the government, and the intent to participate in such protests.

When asked if "absolute victory" in this war was likely, 51% of Israeli Jews said it was unlikely, while 77.5% of Arab Israelis surveyed deemed it unlikely. When broken down by political factions, 84% of those identifying as left-wing believe there is a low likelihood of "absolute victory," while 55% of self-identified right-wing individuals rated the likelihood as high.

Regarding support for transferring humanitarian aid to Gaza's residents, with food and medicine supplied by international organizations unrelated to Hamas or UNRWA, 68% of the Jewish Israelis surveyed stated they do not support this transfer under these conditions, whereas 85% of Arab Israelis support it. Among right-wing Jewish Israelis, 80% oppose humanitarian aid to Gaza under these conditions, while 59% of left-wing Jewish Israelis support it.

When asked about the likelihood of reforming the Palestinian Authority, a vast majority of Arab Israelis (70%) and Jewish Israelis (83%) believe it is unlikely.

There was a significant divide between left and right regarding what would ensure the security of the northern population in the future and the return of evacuees to their homes, with 61.5% of the left believing that a political agreement is the best option, while 65% of the right prefer a comprehensive Israeli attack as the best course of action.

Regarding support for reaching a political agreement to end the entire war, about 55% of Israeli Jews oppose it, while 77% of Arab Israelis support it. Among left-wing Jewish Israelis, 74% favor reaching a political agreement to end the war, while 69% of right-wing Jewish Israelis oppose it. Additionally, a significant majority of Knesset members voted today, Wednesday, against unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state, confirming a government declaration made earlier in the week.
