The Central Bureau of Statistics in Sudan reported today, Tuesday, that "the inflation rate rose to 193.94 percent in July, up from 136.67 percent during the first half of the year." The data from the first half of the year represents the first inflation figures published for the country since the outbreak of war in April 2023, which led to the destruction of the economy and the displacement of one-fifth of the population. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the inflation rate in February before the war, which is the last reported annual inflation rate, was 63.3 percent. Due to the war, national output has contracted by more than 40 percent, and public revenues have shrunk by about 80 percent, relying on printing money in the absence of international funding, amidst the collapse of banks and production projects that the local economy depends on for revenue funding.
