The American newspaper "New York Times" reported on Wednesday, citing three Iranian officials, that "Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered a direct strike on Israel in response to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran." According to the newspaper, the three officials, including two members of the Revolutionary Guard, confirmed that "Khamenei issued the order during an emergency meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council this morning." They added that "Khamenei, who has the final say in all state affairs and is also the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, instructed military leaders from the Revolutionary Guard and the army to prepare plans for offense and defense in the event of war escalation or an Israeli or U.S. strike on Iran."
