Body of American Tourist Found Off Greek Island

Greek media revealed today, Sunday, that a body of an American was found near the island of Corfu in the latest incident during a heatwave, which has also resulted in the disappearance of three tourists. A passerby found the body of the 55-year-old man in the sea near the old port of Mathraki and reported it to the police, according to the Greek Broadcasting Corporation and the Athens News Agency. The man, who was last seen on Tuesday, will have his body transported to Corfu Hospital for an autopsy. According to the Athens News Agency, he was on vacation in Mathraki. This American is the third tourist to die in Greece in recent days, following the death of BBC presenter Michael Mosley last week and a 74-year-old Dutch man whose body was found on Saturday near a fire station in Samos. Reports have indicated that two French women aged 73 and 64 are missing in Sikinos, a small island in the Aegean Sea, and searches are still ongoing for another tourist in Amorgos. Most of these individuals were engaging in hiking under the scorching sun in Greece, where record temperatures reached 43 degrees Celsius in the first week of June. Several meteorological experts noted that this is the largest heatwave ever to hit Greece, characterized by temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days. The archaeological site of the Acropolis in Athens, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Greece's top tourist attractions, partially closed to the public during the hottest hours.
