Iraqi Legislative Approval for Salary Scale: How Will It Be Ratified?

Today, MP Haider Al-Hassanawi announced that many lawmakers have approved the salary scale for employees, emphasizing that modifying the salary scale is a national duty. Al-Hassanawi stated that "the salary scale is not a law but rather an idea for adjusting the salaries of state employees," and that this occurs in two parts: the first being the civil service law, which is expedited and sent by the government for ratification, or through decisions made by the Council of Ministers, similar to the salary increases for grades eight, nine, and ten.

He highlighted that "the variation in state employee salaries is significant," noting that an employee in grade seven earns 600,000 dinars while another in the same grade receives around 2 million dinars, which is "unfair and violates constitutional, humanitarian, and ethical principles." He confirmed that "there is a trend to modify salaries, as it is essential to fairly compensate hundreds of thousands of state employees who suffer from low salaries, with many working elsewhere."

He pointed out that "we firmly support this popular and parliamentary demand, as many representatives of the people, including myself, are calling for official letters and statements during participation in protests and meetings with government leadership regarding salaries." He concluded by stating that "the move towards modifying the salary scale is a national duty."
