1953 - Queen Elizabeth II of Britain was crowned at Westminster in London. It was the first coronation to be broadcast on television.

1966 - The American spacecraft successfully landed on the moon's surface and began sending the first close-up images of the moon.

1979 - Pope John Paul II arrived in his homeland of Poland, becoming the first pope to visit a communist country.

1988 - U.S. President Ronald Reagan visited British Prime Minister Thatcher at Downing Street.

1990 - British actor Sir Rex Harrison passed away. He was known for playing Professor Higgins in the musical "My Fair Lady."

1997 - Timothy McVeigh was convicted on all charges related to the 1995 bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City, which resulted in the deaths of 168 people.

1997 - American tennis player Helen Jacobs died at the age of 88. She won four consecutive U.S. singles titles (1932-1935) and won the Wimbledon Championship in 1936, when she ranked first in the world.

1999 - Japanese women finally gained the right to use birth control pills, after more than three decades of their introduction in the West.

2008 - Rock and roll pioneer Bo Diddley passed away, known for his hit songs supported by his relentless "Bo Diddley beat," which influenced rock music from Buddy Holly to U2.

2010 - U.S. President Barack Obama awarded singer Paul McCartney the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

2017 - The United Nations Security Council voted to expand the blacklist of North Korea.
