What Do Media Polls Reveal About the Competition Between Trump and Harris?

A poll conducted by a media outlet shows that "Vice President Kamala Harris is leading Republican nominee Donald Trump by two percentage points after President Joe Biden withdrew from the U.S. presidential election and endorsed Harris instead." The poll was conducted yesterday and today following the Republican National Convention where Trump was officially nominated for the presidency on Thursday, as well as Biden's announcement on Sunday of his withdrawal and support for Harris.

Harris, whose campaign claims to have the backing of the Democratic Party, is ahead of Trump with 44% to 42% among registered voters, with a margin of error of three percentage points. They were tied at 44% each in a poll conducted on July 15 and 16, while Trump led by one percentage point in a poll taken on the first and second of this month, with both polls having the same margin of error.

National polls provide important insights into American support for candidates, but a set of competitive states typically determines the outcome in the U.S. Electoral College, which ultimately decides the winner of the presidential election. The poll was conducted online and included 1,241 Americans eligible to vote nationally, of whom 1,018 were registered voters.
