Russian doctor and hematologist Zarina Shamsieva mentioned several precautions to take to avoid blood clots during air travel. She stated, "Passengers often sit for long periods in planes, and uncomfortable seating positions combined with reduced movement can increase blood coagulation rates and cause blood clots. People who work in offices, video game enthusiasts, and those who drive for long hours are also at risk of developing blood clots, and the risk for these individuals increases year after year."
She added: "During flights, it is recommended to snack on fiber-rich vegetables, dried fruits, citrus fruits, and berries, while potatoes and dairy products can increase blood viscosity. While seated in an aircraft for extended periods, it is advisable to move the feet occasionally or to get up and walk in the aisle, as this will help stimulate circulation and reduce the likelihood of blood clots in the blood vessels."
The doctor recommended wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothes, avoiding tight belts around the waist, and not crossing legs while sitting in an airplane seat. She also advised against consuming alcohol or sleeping pills during flights.
