The Sudanese city of Kassala has witnessed heavy rainfall, causing water to enter homes and numerous displacement shelters, amid difficulties in drainage and sewage systems. The Kassala Youth Emergency Room has issued an urgent appeal to anyone with water pumps to immediately head to the shelters at the Industrial School, the concrete structure, Omar Hajj Musa, and the referral hospital to assist in draining the rainwater. They also called for everyone to provide clothing and heaters, particularly for children.
The suffering of displaced individuals in the shelters in Kassala is exacerbated by the heavy rains that have fallen today and have destroyed some of the displaced persons' homes. Earlier, Khadir Ramadan, the director general of the Ministry of Agriculture in Kassala, announced the deaths of four people and the destruction of hundreds of homes in rural Kassala and the village of Aroma due to the heavy rains affecting the state. He stated, "According to what has been announced by the Meteorological Authority in Sudan and the Kenyan Observatory, rainfall rates during the rainy season will be above normal levels. The beginning was promising, as the amount of rain that has fallen so far ranges between 150 and 270 millimeters in most areas, and in the southern areas of Wadi Al-Halio in Kassala state, the rainfall has exceeded 340 millimeters."
