Egypt Denies Selling the Suez Canal for One Trillion Dollars

The Egyptian government responded to an audio clip circulating on some social media pages, which claims that it intends to sell the Suez Canal for one trillion dollars. A statement issued by the Egyptian Prime Minister’s Office on Saturday indicated that the media center of the council contacted the Suez Canal Authority, which denied these claims, affirming that there is no truth to the government's intention to sell the Suez Canal for one trillion dollars, and that the circulating audio clip is fabricated, containing false information that does not relate to reality.

The Authority emphasized that the Suez Canal will remain entirely owned by the Egyptian state, and will be under its sovereignty in terms of management, operation, and maintenance, with all personnel of the Canal Authority, including employees, technicians, and administrators, being Egyptian nationals.

It stated that the canal or any of its facilities cannot be tampered with, as they are constitutionally protected under Article 43 of the Egyptian Constitution, which stipulates that "the state is committed to protecting the Suez Canal, developing it, and maintaining it as an international waterway owned by it, and is also committed to developing the canal sector as a distinctive economic center."

The Suez Canal Authority urged Egyptians not to be swayed by these lies and to obtain information from reliable sources.
