The Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Committee on Women and Children, MP Inaya Azeddine, has called on the international community "to pressure Israel to implement Resolution 1701 and halt its aggression that aims at the systematic destruction of villages and lands in southern Lebanon." She emphasized "the importance of regional and international cooperation to enhance Lebanon's response to the multidimensional crises it has been facing for five years," urging international institutions to "understand the Lebanese situation and take its peculiarities into account, ease the conditions imposed for obtaining necessary aid, and provide the needed assistance to cover the needs of Syrian refugees while encouraging their return to Syria, alongside covering the costs of addressing the impacts of displacement on Lebanon."
Azeddine's remarks came during Lebanon's speech at the High-Level Political Forum for Middle-Income Countries held in New York at the invitation of the United Nations. She added that "despite Lebanon’s commitment to the 2030 agenda, it has faced severe crises in recent years that have affected its ability to achieve sustainable development goals, many of which have seen significant setbacks."
Azeddine enumerated indicators of the economic, monetary, and social decline witnessed in Lebanon, and spoke about measures taken by the Lebanese government to address these challenges, which "led to a relative stabilization of the exchange rate and the establishment of a program with the World Bank targeting the poorest households." She also mentioned the parliamentary approval of laws to achieve sustainable development goals, including laws criminalizing sexual harassment, combating domestic violence, promoting good governance, as well as environmental and economic laws aimed at supporting local industry and expanding the social protection network.
