According to the "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights," Merhej al-Jurmany, the leader of the Mountain Brigade in the city of Sweida, was killed by unknown assailants who infiltrated his home early Wednesday morning.
The information obtained by the observatory indicates that the leader served in the National Defense Forces between 2011 and 2013, before forming a local faction under the banner of "Protecting Land and Honor" in Jabal al-Arab. His faction played a significant role in eliminating notable collaborators with the Lebanese "Hezbollah" and security services, particularly a drug dealer named Raji Falhout.
Al-Jurmany is regarded as one of the founders of the civilian "Sahat al-Karama" movement in Sweida and played an active role in maintaining discipline during protests, contributing to the continuation of demonstrations. Sources from the observatory confirmed that the leader had a good reputation and coordinated with local leaders and sheikhs. He refused to work with Syrian opposition figures to prevent international dictates from influencing Jabal al-Arab.
His assassination came after he was tasked with investigating a citizen known for making derogatory comments on social media. The individual was arrested and handed over to Sheikh Hammoud al-Hanawi's house, but al-Jurmany was killed before completing the investigation.
Furthermore, assassination operations are increasing across Syria amid the absence of law and accountability. The observatory reported yesterday that unknown armed men assassinated a member of the National Defense militia in front of his home in the city of Salamiyeh, located in the eastern countryside of Hama.
