Hoekstein Concludes His Visit: "I Am Here to Resolve the Conflict over Southern Lebanon Borders"

Hoekstein Concludes His Visit:

The American envoy Amos Hoekstein began his activities in Lebanon with a visit to Ain al-Tineh, where he met Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri. Hoekstein pointed out from Ain al-Tineh that "escalation is not beneficial for any party, and there is nothing called a limited war; escalation will not help Lebanon to rebuild and progress during this important time in its history. However, a temporary ceasefire is not enough, and a limited war is not realistic."

He emphasized that "the United States is committed to working towards a long-term solution through a political process, which can allow displaced Lebanese to return to their homes, and the same applies to the other side of the border." Hoekstein continued that "today's visit comes after weeks of escalation that is neither beneficial nor assists in the return of the displaced to their homes; escalation does not help resolve this crisis, and certainly, escalation does not aid Lebanon in rebuilding and progressing during this sensitive period in its history."

He noted that "a temporary ceasefire is insufficient, and a limited war cannot be contained. The security situation along the Blue Line must ensure the safety of all parties. The United States believes that diplomatic solutions are the only way to put an end to the ongoing military operations and to achieve long-term stability; everyone has the right to live in security and stability."

Hoekstein concluded by stating that "what we are doing is not an American effort alone; we are working with our partners worldwide to create opportunities that enhance stability and prosperity for Lebanon, its people, institutions, and economy."

Hoekstein's one-day visit to Beirut is part of diplomatic efforts aimed at halting the exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel. In this context, Prime Minister Saad Hariri received Amos Hoekstein in the Grand Serail in the afternoon, where U.S. Ambassador Lisa Johnson and the Prime Minister's advisor Ziad Mikati also participated. Amos briefed Mikati on recent developments in the region and the efforts being made to reach a ceasefire.

Hoekstein then proceeded to Yarze, where he was received by Army Commander General Joseph Aoun, and they discussed the general situation in the country and developments on the southern border. Later in the evening, Hoekstein held a meeting at the Parliament with MPs George Adwan, George Okais, Samy Gemayel, Elias Hankach, and Michel Moawad. He then headed to Beirut Airport, concluding his visit in Beirut with a meeting with Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab in the VIP lounge before departing Beirut.
