Approximately 20,000 people demonstrated in the streets of Palma on the island of Mallorca to protest against overtourism, demanding a change in tourism policies that they claim are harming the Spanish island located in the Mediterranean. Behind a banner that read "Let’s change course and limit tourism," the crowds chanted in unison and waved colorful signs and flags as they paraded through the tourist city, following a call from around 80 organizations and civil society groups. The organizers of this movement argue that the current model puts public services on the brink of collapse, damages natural resources, and makes it difficult for locals to find housing. One sign in English stated, "Your prosperity is our misery," while another criticized foreign workers who moved to the island to work remotely. Another sign simplified the equation stating, "This is not anti-tourism, it's numbers: 1,232,014 local residents and 18 million tourists."
