Nine Dead and 26 Injured in Bus Accident in Turkey

At least nine people were killed and 26 others injured on Friday after a bus collided with a bridge in Ankara, according to an initial toll reported by the governor of the Turkish capital. The accident occurred around 5 PM local time (2 PM GMT) when a passenger bus coming from Eskisehir in central Turkey struck a bridge wall on a highway near Ankara, prompting the intervention of numerous ambulances and rescue teams, as reported by the Turkish state television channel TRT. Ankara Governor Vasip Sahin, quoted by the channel, stated: "There was no trace of braking at the scene, which suggests that the driver may have dozed off." An investigation into the accident has been launched. Turkey witnesses many bus accidents; in May, ten people were killed and forty injured in a collision involving a bus, two cars, and a truck on a highway near Mersin in southern Turkey.
