China Condemns Japan's Move to Discharge Fukushima Nuclear Plant Water into the Pacific Ocean

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Thursday that Beijing has once again expressed its strong opposition to Japan's decision to begin discharging treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. China emphasized that the disposal of contaminated water is a major issue concerning nuclear safety with cross-border implications, and the matter is not solely Japan's concern, according to the statement. Japan commenced the discharge of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima plant, which was devastated by the tsunami in 2011. China declared that it would take necessary measures to protect the marine environment, food safety, and public health. Additionally, the Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister summoned the Japanese ambassador to Beijing to protest against this action. The Chinese foreign ministry pointed out that Japan has not proven the accuracy of the data regarding contaminated water or the completeness and effectiveness of its monitoring program.
