Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City and a major donor to the Democratic Party, urged Democrats on Monday not to rush the process of replacing President Joe Biden as their candidate. Bloomberg declined to offer immediate support for Vice President Harris, whom Biden endorsed to succeed him after he announced the cancellation of his reelection bid on Sunday.
Bloomberg stated in a message posted on X: "We don't need to come to a decision immediately, but we need to come to it correctly. The decision is so important that it cannot be rushed, as the elections are significant and we must not lose them." He pointed out that the Democratic National Convention is still four weeks away.
Bloomberg ran against Biden for the Democratic nomination in 2020 but withdrew and supported Biden, subsequently pumping millions of dollars into the general election. According to Federal Election Commission records, Bloomberg contributed nearly $20 million to a pro-Biden super PAC in the final weeks of the election.
Other prominent Democratic donors have rallied behind Harris, including Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, who praised her on Sunday, calling her "the right person at the right time."
