The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported today that "the North Korean army has built roads and walls within the demilitarized zone that separates the north and south." The agency cited a military source who wished to remain anonymous, stating that "construction activities are taking place north of the military demarcation line, which runs through the middle of the demilitarized zone." This follows an incident last week when South Korean forces fired warning shots after North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the military demarcation line. South Korean authorities indicated that this might have been an accidental incursion.
The military source told Yonhap, "Recently, the North Korean army has constructed walls, dug the ground, and built roads in some areas between the military demarcation line and the demilitarized zone line to the north," adding that it is unclear what exactly they are building. In response to Yonhap's report, the South Korean army stated in a statement that "it is closely monitoring the activities of the North Korean army," and added that "more analysis is necessary." They noted that they cannot disclose their response to these actions "to ensure the safety of the individuals who will carry out the operation," without providing further details. Additionally, a South Korean intelligence agency reported this week that it has detected signs that North Korea is demolishing parts of a railway line connecting the two countries.
