The International Atomic Energy Agency reported a leak of approximately 25 tons of radioactive water from the second unit of the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan. The agency stated: "The International Atomic Energy Agency was informed that on August 9, 2024, Tepco discovered a water leak in the second power unit of the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, resulting in the leakage of nearly 25 tons of water from the pump unit in the spent fuel cooling system and the heat exchanger room, with the leaked water entering a ground drain."
It added: "As a precaution, Tepco halted the main fuel cooling pump to investigate the cause and assess the temperature level in the pool. The company confirmed that the temperature remained within normal limits, not exceeding about 46 degrees Celsius, which is below the operational temperature limit of 65 degrees Celsius."
According to the agency, it was clarified that the water leak remained inside the building, and Tepco would treat the leaked water using its water treatment units. The agency indicated that it had not been informed of any violations of radiation protection standards.
