Google sparked anger among some Olympic viewers over the weekend with an advertisement showcasing its AI program, which helps a girl write a letter to her favorite athlete. The "Dear Sydney" ad aims to promote the capabilities of the "Gemini AI" program and features a man emotionally describing how this smart tool helped his daughter write to American athlete Sydney Michelle McLaughlin-Levrone, who set the world record in the women's 400-meter hurdles final at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. However, some viewers criticized the ad, arguing that it promotes the idea that parents should encourage their children to rely on artificial intelligence instead of learning to express themselves. Shelley Palmer, a media professor at Syracuse University in New York, stated in a blog post, "It's one of the most troubling ads I've ever seen," adding, "This is not what we want anyone to do with artificial intelligence."
