Assad from Beijing: The Eastern Approach is a Guarantee for Syria

Syrian President Bashar Assad indicated on Monday that "China plays a significant role in re-establishing international balance in the world," asserting that "the eastern approach is a political, cultural, and economic guarantee for Syria." During his meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing, Assad thanked the Chinese government "for the support it provided to Syria during the war in general, and during the earthquake in particular, whether humanitarian or political support."

Assad emphasized that "China plays a major role on the international stage and in rebalancing the world." He added, "Syria today is more committed to the eastern approach, as it is the political, cultural, and economic guarantee for it, and this is a principle in Syrian policy." He noted that "the friendship and trust between Syria and China are built on a shared history and steadfast principles, which are the same principles that we can launch from towards the future." He considered that "the relationship between the two countries can be strengthened through the three initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping to develop cooperation in the economic and cultural fields, and to create joint investment projects within the Belt and Road Initiative." He pointed out that "most countries in the world aspire for the Chinese currency, the yuan, to become an international currency, especially since the Western weapon against countries around the world is the dollar."

During his meeting with Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, President Assad stated that "the transition from the old world that relies on power to the new world that relies on ethics should begin with China's role, which follows a moral policy, moral development, and presents initiatives for the entire world." He said, "The initiatives proposed by President Xi Jinping embody hope and open doors to a new world," stressing that Syria looks forward to China's role both now and in the future, a role that achieves mutual benefit for the peoples, rather than profit at the expense of others.

Assad congratulated China on its success in achieving the Saudi-Iranian agreement, considering that "this success is proof that China today forms an international, civilizational, political, and moral force." For his part, Zhao Leji affirmed that "communication between legislative institutions is important to support the development of bilateral relations," noting that "Syria and China work hand in hand and will continue to exchange support concerning the core interests of both parties in order to strengthen the friendship between the two countries and enhance mutual understanding between the two peoples."

Zhao also spoke about China's concept for "a community with a shared future for mankind," aiming to build an open, stable world characterized by peace, security, and prosperity for all, in the face of coalition policies and the aggravation of unrest, affirming that "China will remain on the right side of history, to enhance development for all humanity." This comes as part of an official visit by the Syrian president and his wife to China, where he held a summit with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping and signed three strategic cooperation agreements between the two countries.
