U.S. Army Completes Withdrawal from Last Base in Niger

The U.S. Department of Defense announced that the U.S. military has completed the full withdrawal of its troops from its last base in Niger, following more than a year of requests from the new military authorities in Niger for this withdrawal. The Pentagon stated in a joint announcement with the Niger Ministry of Defense that "the withdrawal of U.S. forces and assets from Air Base (201) in Agadez has been completed."

The statement added: "This effort will continue between U.S. and Nigerien armed forces over the coming weeks to ensure the full withdrawal is completed as planned." It continued: "Over the past decade, U.S. forces trained Nigerien troops and supported partner-led counterterrorism missions against ISIS and al-Qaeda in the region. The cooperation and effective communication between U.S. and Nigerien armed forces allowed for the completion of this operation ahead of schedule and without complications."

By the end of 2023, about 1,100 U.S. military personnel were stationed in Niger, most of them at a base near Agadez in the northern part of the country.
