Brazilian Defender Filipe Luis Honored Before Retirement

Defender Filipe Luis, player for Flamengo in the Brazilian football league, was honored at Maracanã Stadium today, Sunday, after the 38-year-old announced his retirement following a successful 20-year career. The former left-back of Atlético Madrid bid farewell to the fans in a ceremony before Flamengo's 2-1 victory over Cuiabá in the domestic league. Luis will play his final match in São Paulo next Wednesday.

In a video published by Flamengo, Filipe Luis confirmed his retirement last Thursday, saying, "The feeling that remains is only one ... gratitude. Thank you very much. These were undoubtedly the best years of my life."

The former Brazilian international participated in 683 professional matches, most of them with Atlético, where he won six of his total 18 titles, including La Liga and two UEFA Europa League titles. Luis played 44 matches for Brazil and won the Copa América in 2019. He is expected to continue at Flamengo in an administrative or coaching role, according to local media reports.
