British police announced on Tuesday that they have arrested over a thousand individuals so far, following days of riots that included violence, arson, looting, and racist attacks targeting Muslims and immigrants. The unrest began after the deaths of three young girls in Southport, northern England, triggered by false online posts erroneously linking the crime to a Muslim immigrant. Chaos erupted in cities across England and Northern Ireland, but incidents of unrest have decreased since last week due to intensive efforts to identify those involved in the violence. Authorities moved quickly to arrest many individuals, with some receiving lengthy prison sentences. The National Police Chiefs’ Council stated in its latest report that 1,024 people have been arrested, with charges brought against approximately 575 of them across the UK. Among those arrested is a 69-year-old man accused of involvement in vandalism in Liverpool and an 11-year-old boy in Belfast.
