Sudan: Closure of Main Hospital in El Fasher After Attack

Doctors Without Borders announced that the main hospital in the Sudanese city of El Fasher, which it supports, has come under attack and is out of service. The Minister of Health in North Darfur, Ibrahim Khater, stated that the Southern Hospital, the main facility in El Fasher that handles emergency cases, is no longer operational following attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Khater told the Arabic World News Agency: "The hospital is completely shut down after patients, their companions, and medical staff were evacuated."

He revealed that armed members of the RSF stormed the Southern Hospital and assaulted the hospital staff, medical personnel, and patients in a brutal manner, resulting in varying injuries among the medical staff and civilians, including the hospital's general director and the head of the emergency department, who suffered a broken leg.

Khater accused the RSF of stealing two ambulances, a significant amount of medical equipment, computers, and destroying what remained of the equipment inside the hospital after the attack. He noted an increase in civilian casualties due to the fighting between the army and the RSF since May 10, with the death toll rising to 481 and the number of injuries to 3,727, most of whom are children, the elderly, and women "killed due to deliberate artillery shelling" carried out by the RSF on residential neighborhoods, shelters, markets, and hospitals.

For its part, the coalition of Sudanese displaced persons and refugees warned of "the dangerous escalation of RSF attacks on hospitals and health facilities," which makes the health situation in the city extremely precarious, especially as the city houses more than two million residents. They accused the RSF of "continuing their approach aimed at emptying the city of its population to occupy citizens' homes" and urged the international and regional community to "monitor the violations by the RSF as they kill doctors and assault health facilities." They also called for the RSF to be designated as a terrorist organization.
