A wave of anger and ridicule swept through a western Turkish province after a video surfaced showing a home in a popular tourist destination during the summer season. According to local media reports, a Turkish man and his wife stored waste in their residence for 25 years, provoking outrage among social media users in Turkey.
Turkish media reported that the municipality discovered the waste following the death of the Turkish husband. The municipality intervened to remove the waste, which required multiple large trucks, as depicted in the circulated video. The Izmir municipality used 10 large trucks for the trash removal process, which lasted four days.
Local media indicated that the garbage removal and transportation took four days to complete. Police and ambulance teams found the waste when the wife had called for assistance upon her husband's sudden death. Municipal workers began to remove the trash once the police confirmed the presence of large amounts of waste in the home.
The sight of garbage collection bewildered residents of the neighborhood where the Turkish couple lived. It remains unclear whether the municipality will impose a fine on the homeowner for accumulating waste with her husband for 25 years. Many social media users condemned the couple's actions, with some calling for the wife to be punished and fined.
