Israel Agrees to Resume Ceasefire Talks... Will the Deal Happen?

Israel has agreed to resume talks regarding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on August 15, based on a request from mediator countries the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, according to an announcement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office on Thursday. Netanyahu's office stated that Israel will send negotiators to participate in a meeting on August 15 to attempt to reach an agreement for the release of hostages held in Gaza and a ceasefire.

Netanyahu's office said, "Based on the proposal presented by the United States and the mediators, Israel will send a delegation of negotiators to a location that will be determined later to finalize the details and implement the framework agreement."

The three mediators called in a joint statement for Israel and Hamas to resume ceasefire talks either in Doha or Cairo next week to resolve disputes over the ceasefire agreement. The recent discussions have focused on the framework outlined by U.S. President Joe Biden in late May, which he described as an Israeli proposal.

The statement indicated that the latest framework agreement "is based on the principles proposed by President Biden." The three leaders added, "It is time to finalize an agreement for a ceasefire and the release of hostages and detainees," further stating, "No more time should be wasted, and there should be no excuses from any party for further delays."
