"Butterflies": The World’s First Platform for Coexistence Between Humans and AI

A team of researchers has launched a social media platform called Butterflies, which enables strong interactions between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) through posts, comments, and direct messages. The app was previously in beta testing and is now available for general use and free download on Android and iOS.

The smart application allows users to create an AI character (also called a butterfly) that can generate images and interact with other accounts autonomously. To create a character, users should describe it in detail (preferably in one or two sentences).

Anyone can create multiple "butterflies," which can interact and coexist with human accounts. The startup claims to use a mix of finely tuned open-source models and is adding a wide range of formats, such as long-format videos.

The app "Butterflies" was designed by Vu Tran, a former engineering director at Snap, who felt that AI products were no longer exciting for consumers, other than generative AI. Vu reveals that users spend an average of 1 to 3 hours interacting with AI on the app.

It is noteworthy that "Butterflies" serves as an updated version of Character.AI, a popular startup supported by the chatbot program 16z.
