After Hamas announced the commencement of extensive consultations within its leadership and advisory bodies to select a new head of the political bureau following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the name of his successor was revealed. Sources for "Al Arabiya" reported that Mohammed Ismail Darwish was chosen as the new head of Hamas's political bureau, replacing Haniyeh, until elections are held within the movement. They also mentioned that the new head, "Mohammed Ismail Darwish," resides in Qatar.
However, sources within Hamas confirmed that "any information regarding the selection of any individual as Haniyeh's successor is inaccurate, as long as no official statement has been issued by the movement in this regard," pointing out that consultations on this matter are still ongoing. Hamas announced on Saturday the start of extensive consultations within its leadership and advisory bodies to choose a new head of the political bureau following Haniyeh's assassination.
According to the movement's basic bylaws, members of the Central Shura Council, which includes around 50 members, including members of the movement's Central Political Bureau, are responsible for electing the president.
Senwar Rejects Khaled Meshaal
Earlier, "Al Arabiya/Al Hadath" sources indicated that Hamas had conducted consultations in Qatar to choose a successor to Haniyeh. They stated that Yahya Senwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, opposes the idea of Khaled Meshaal, the former leader of the movement who survived an Israeli assassination attempt in Jordan in 1997 and currently resides in Qatar, leading Hamas at this time. The sources indicated that Yahya Senwar prefers a figure who has good relations with Iran and Syria to succeed Haniyeh. Additionally, they noted that the selection of a leadership figure will be temporary until elections are held within Hamas in the coming months.
