Sweden Protests After Iraqi Decision to Execute Swedes

In a new and swift development regarding the case of Swedish gangs abroad, an Iraqi court has sentenced two Swedish citizens to death for the murder of Mustafa Al-Jubouri, who was a leader in the Swedish Kurdish Fox gang. The court proceedings and sentencing took place in Iraq without notifying the Swedish police or the families of the accused, as reported by the newspaper "Aftonbladet." Mustafa Al-Jubouri, an ally and friend of Rafa Majid, was shot in the streets of Baghdad, leading to his death in early 2024. Shortly thereafter, Iraqi authorities managed to apprehend the three Swedes and put them on trial until the sentence was issued.

For its part, the Swedish Foreign Ministry confirmed that it opposes the death penalty and stated that it had received information regarding the issuance of the death sentence against two of its citizens in Iraq. It said, "If the accuracy of this information is officially confirmed, it is, of course, a very serious matter. In this case, Sweden will act swiftly to ensure that the sentence is not carried out; we oppose the death penalty always and everywhere regardless of the circumstances." Additionally, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson commented on the reports regarding the sentence in Iraq for two Swedish citizens, saying: "We do not know if this information is accurate; we will confirm it officially, but we know that we are strongly opposed to the death penalty – we always feel responsible towards our citizens," emphasizing that the government will closely follow the case.
