New Comment from the Iraqi President on Provincial Council Elections

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani, confirmed today, Wednesday, that no violations were observed during the electoral process. The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief, Lieutenant General Yahya Rasoul, stated that "the Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Mohammed Shiaa Al-Sudani, chaired a meeting of the National Security Ministerial Council, attended by Council members to discuss the security situations in the country and the efforts of security forces to establish security and stability, as well as discussing a number of files and topics on the agenda."

He added that "the attendees discussed the situation of Syrian displaced persons in the camps, based on what was presented by the Ministry of Migration and Displaced Persons. It was agreed to form a joint committee from the Ministries of Migration and Displaced Persons and Interior, the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, and the National Security Agency, to prepare a specific inventory of these displaced individuals according to accurate databasing, which will also enable providing support and relief to them."

He continued, "In another sector, the Army Staff presented a vision for the next year to complete the handover of the security file from the Ministry of Defense to the Ministry of Interior, which has successfully received this file in the provinces of Babylon, Diwaniyah, Najaf, Wasit, and Al-Muthanna, with a significant degree of security stability in these provinces."

He indicated that "the council discussed the request from the General Security Directorate of the Lebanese Republic for support in tracking terrorists and drug traffickers and intensifying coordination on shared security issues. The meeting included a detailed briefing from the Chief of Army Staff after a decree was issued assigning him to lead the military parade scheduled for January 6, on the occasion of the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the heroic Iraqi army, as well as the latest preparations for this parade. The attendees also discussed the unfortunate incident involving the Saudi and Kuwaiti fishermen and opened a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances of this incident."

He pointed out that "at the conclusion of the meeting, the Prime Minister, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to all security agencies and intelligence departments that worked to secure and ensure the success of the 2023 provincial council elections and to create a safe and suitable environment for all participants in this democratic process in the country, commending the security plan for these elections, which sent a message to the whole world about the readiness of Iraqi security forces and the collective efforts in this electoral process, which did not record any violations."
