Impending Diplomatic Thaw Between Egypt and Iran

Iran is nearing another milestone in its effort to resume relations with Arab countries, as an announcement regarding the exchange of ambassadors between Cairo and Tehran is expected soon. The restoration of relations between Tehran and various Arab capitals is seen as a pivotal step towards stabilizing the region, effectively undermining the "boogeyman" that Washington has historically leveraged to drain Arab states, according to experts. Following the renewal of ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, a similar step is anticipated between Cairo and Tehran, particularly after the recent call in which the Iranian president congratulated his Egyptian counterpart on winning the latest presidential elections.

In this context, member of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Rakhah Ahmad Hassan, stated that it is likely that the exchange of ambassadors between Egypt and Iran will happen soon. He pointed out that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi's congratulatory message to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi indicates that relations have reached a high level.

In his conversation with "Sputnik," he mentioned that during the Iranian president's call to el-Sisi, various issues were discussed, including the restoration of relations between the two countries and regional files concerning Gaza and the Red Sea. Rakhah noted that "the current level of relations between the two countries suggests that the exchange of ambassadors is imminent." He posited that Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq's remarks align with ongoing efforts in the region or relate to the implications of restoring relations.

He believes that the exchange of ambassadors could occur after President el-Sisi takes the oath of office for his new presidential term. He emphasized that restoring relations between the two countries would complete a circle, especially following the recent rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and efforts to resolve the Yemeni crisis. According to Rakhah, a former assistant foreign minister, Iran's engagement in the Arab scene in a different manner, alongside increasing trade exchanges with Arab countries, contributes to stability and development.

The Sultan of Oman, during his meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran, offered Omani mediation to restore relations between Iran and Egypt. According to the official website of the Supreme Leader, he stated, "We welcome the Sultan of Oman's declaration regarding Egypt's desire to resume relations with the Islamic Republic, and we have no problem in this regard." He added that "these issues have arisen as a result of the good policy of President Raisi's government aimed at expanding and developing relations with neighboring countries and the region."
