A court in the Sharqia governorate of Egypt has decided to dismiss case number 15686 filed at the Dairb Nigm police station, where a woman was accused of assaulting her mother-in-law in the Dairb Nigm area, following a reconciliation between both parties in front of the court.
The presiding judge of the Dairb Nigm court, Judge Hassan Abdel-Aty, had previously extended the detention of the accused for 15 days pending investigations.
Security forces in the Sharqia security directorate arrested the accused for allegedly assaulting her husband’s mother, a case that gained widespread attention after a video of the incident circulated on Facebook.
The video showed the accused violently hitting her mother-in-law and dragging her down the stairs, despite her advanced age, inciting anger and outrage among viewers.
The husband of the accused stated that the family filed a report against his wife for attacking his mother, leading to the accused being detained for presentation to the public prosecutor.
On July 25, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior revealed the circumstances surrounding the video posted by a young man on Facebook, showing his mother being assaulted by her daughter-in-law amid public outrage on social media.
The ministry stated in a statement: "The circumstances surrounding what was circulated on one of the personal accounts regarding a video showing the wife of the account owner assaulting his mother in Sharqia were clarified."
The statement continued: "Upon investigation, it was established that the individual who published the video (a worker residing abroad) was disturbed by his wife (a housewife residing with his mother) for assaulting his mother after a verbal dispute between them due to family disagreements."
The ministry added: "Upon summoning his mother, she confirmed the previous account and accused her son's wife of assaulting her. When the accused was summoned, she admitted to committing the act for the same reason. Legal procedures were initiated."
