U.S. officials have warned that "the confirmed famine in one of the sprawling displacement camps for those displaced by the war in Darfur, Sudan, is escalating out of control as armed groups in the country are blocking aid." Officials cautioned that the current conditions threaten to make the famine more deadly than the last major famine in the world 13 years ago. The U.S. Agency for International Development and the United Nations World Food Program, along with other independent and governmental humanitarian agencies, have intensified calls for a ceasefire and for aid to be delivered throughout Sudan, after international experts officially confirmed on Thursday that the famine in at least one of the three giant temporary camps, housing up to 600,000 people displaced by the war that has lasted for over a year, has developed into a full-scale famine.
