Polish nationalists and leftists oppose hosting the Olympic Games in the country following Prime Minister Donald Tusk's announcement of Poland's bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2040 or 2044. Daria Gosek-Popiołek, a member of the Polish Parliament from the "Left" coalition, stated on TVN: "Poland should not organize such an expensive event, as it certainly has more important priorities." The parliamentarian noted that Poland needs "large developmental projects, but not to pump billions into a sports event that lasts two weeks." She also referenced an audit conducted by the Supreme Audit Office in Poland in 2016 regarding the idea of hosting the Winter Olympics in Krakow, which recommended holding a local referendum on the matter.
For his part, Krzysztof Maława, a member of Parliament from the coalition of nationalists and Eurosceptics, remarked that "Poles are not expecting offers right now, but only bread." He indicated that the country is awaiting major investment projects, including the construction of a nuclear power plant. In his view, "countries ready for it should decide to participate in the Olympics, and Poland must first engage seriously in building a central communication port." The French capital, Paris, hosted the 33rd Summer Olympics, which took place from July 24 to August 11, 2024.
