During their meeting on Thursday, July 4, 2024, President Abdul Latif Rashid and the President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, emphasized the importance of active and serious dialogue between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region. The media office of the presidency stated that Rashid welcomed Barzani's visit to Baghdad and highlighted its significance in enhancing constructive dialogue among all national forces to consolidate security and stability, expressing hope that it would yield results beneficial to all Iraqis.
The statement further noted that the meeting confirmed the necessity of effective and serious dialogue between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region to resolve outstanding issues in accordance with the constitution and law, ensuring the rights of all citizens and securing a decent living for them. It also reiterated the importance of strengthening national unity to reinforce security and stability and ensure the safety of citizens, with a focus on improving living and service conditions.
Following this, President Rashid hosted a meeting that included Barzani and several political leaders, where he praised the positive relationship and its development between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region. He expressed hope for resolving all outstanding issues, particularly those related to the financial budget, the legislation of a detailed oil and gas law, and the implementation of Article 140 of the constitution.
Rashid pointed to the significance of coordination and consultation among political forces on national issues, such as the decision regarding the presence of international coalition forces and the United Nations Security Council's decision on the conclusion of the UNAMI mission in Iraq, as well as the relationship between Iraq and the United Nations, along with security violations and actions that undermine Iraq's sovereignty.
For his part, Barzani expressed his gratitude to the President for the warm welcome, noting that his visit to Baghdad aims to enhance relations and cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government and to resolve outstanding issues in a manner that serves all citizens. He emphasized that the relationship between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region is positive and heading in the right direction, confirming the Kurdistan Region's support for establishing security and stability in the country and joint coordination to resolve all issues in a way that meets the aspirations of the people.
The meeting also confirmed the importance of fulfilling national obligations in electing a new Speaker of the House of Representatives and strengthening the legislative institution and its crucial role in law-making and oversight. The discussions touched upon the general situation in Iraq, its political, economic, and social developments, as well as regional and global developments and their impacts on the country, stressing the need to enhance cooperation and coordination among all political forces and work towards consolidating security and stability and improving services provided to citizens.
