Data from the auction house "Henry Aldridge & Son" revealed the sale of a gold watch owned by John Astor, the richest man aboard the Titanic, for nearly $1.5 million at auction. The British network "Sky News" reported that "the gold pocket watch, recovered from the body of the richest man on the Titanic, was sold for a record amount of £1.175 million." Initially, the watch was expected to be sold for between £100,000 and £150,000. According to the auction house Henry Aldridge & Son, this is the highest amount ever raised from the sale of Titanic memorabilia. Businessman John Jacob Astor (47 years old) drowned with the ship in 1912 after seeing his new wife, Madeline, on a lifeboat, according to the British news agency "PA Media." Instead of trying his luck with another lifeboat, Astor, who was last seen dressed elegantly and smoking a cigarette while speaking with another passenger, was found later. His body was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean a week later, along with the 14-carat gold pocket watch.
