Lebanon's Electricity: Statements Regarding Chemical Materials at the Jiyyeh Plant

The Lebanese Electricity Corporation announced, in a statement, that "in reference to what was published on the Lebanon Al-Kabeer website on 15/06/2024, regarding the existence of hazardous waste at the Jiyyeh thermal plant, and in reference to the Corporation's previous statements, particularly on 24/3/2022 and 29/4/2022, as well as the latest statement on 29/05/2024, it is important for the Lebanese Electricity Corporation to confirm that this news is absolutely untrue. The plant contains chemical materials similar to those found at the Zouk thermal plant, which are used during the operation of production units and are the same as those used in industrial plants, especially thermal plants. These do not pose any danger to public safety at the plant or its surroundings and are well-stored, having been inspected by security agencies and relevant authorities."

The statement continued: "As for the materials that need to be evacuated, they are also properly and safely stored in one container. However, the contracted company Tecmo, representing Combilift, has been unable to obtain the necessary approvals from the relevant ministries to evacuate these materials from the Zouk and Jiyyeh plants. Some specialized companies in this field have been contacted, and five companies have expressed their willingness to provide a proposal for the disposal or evacuation of these materials."
